Robot delivers drinks at Kura Sushi revolving sushi restaurant in Framingham

Waitstaff won’t be the ones bringing you your food or drink at a sushi restaurant in Framingham. Instead, it’s all done by technology.

Kura Sushi opened a new location in Framingham on June 23, located at 1 Worcester Road in Shoppers World, Unit 700B. It features revolving sushi, robots, prizes and more. The restaurant has more than 500 locations across Japan, Taiwan and the United States. It also has a location in Watertown and is opening soon in Dorchester.

Food is brought to tables on a two-layered conveyor belt system. It has more than 140 menu items.

“The revolving sushi bar circulates throughout the entire restaurant with various sushi plate offerings,” the restaurant said.

Prizes are also offered after every 15 sushi plates are dispensed into the plate slot.

And robots bring you your drinks.

“How this works is once the waitstaff receives a notification about a party’s drink order, they place the beverages on Kur-B and program it to deliver to the corresponding table,” a statement read. “With the added features to the tablets, guests can place their drink orders directly on the tablet and check-out on their mobile phone, limiting their wait times for service and providing more options for how they want to experience Kura Revolving Sushi Bar.”

In 2022, a robot at Bonapita in West Roxbury began preparing salads and bowls.

Shortages of employees impacted Bonapita during the COVID-19 pandemic. The robot helped with that.

“We’re very excited to have Alfred in our kitchen,” Bonapita owner Ilan Barniv said in a statement then. “We had to find alternative solutions following 2-plus years of extreme employee shortages. The installation was quick, and it’s very easy to use. We didn’t have to remodel or change the layout of the kitchen. And most importantly, we didn’t have to alter our menu.”
